What Prenatal Chiropractic Care Is and Who It's For

Pregnancy asks a lot of your body in a short time. Your centre of gravity moves forward, the curve in your low back changes, and hormones loosen the ligaments around your pelvis so it can make room. Most of the time your body adapts well. When the load outpaces that adaptation, it usually shows up as discomfort in the low back, pelvis or hips. That discomfort is a message, not a malfunction.

Prenatal chiropractic care at Philo is gentle, hands-on care built for this stage. It suits anyone who is pregnant and feeling back, pelvic or hip discomfort, or who wants support to keep moving well as their body changes. Care is adapted to each trimester, and you're never asked to lie on your belly.

Your body is doing the work. Our role is to create the conditions that make that work feel more manageable.

What a Prenatal Visit Looks Like

Every visit is shaped by how far along you are and how you're feeling that day.

01

A conversation first

Dr. Courtney asks how your pregnancy is going, where you're feeling it, and what your days and sleep look like right now.
02

A gentle assessment

She looks at how your pelvis, low back and hips are moving, including the Webster Technique, a specific assessment of the pelvis and sacrum that she's certified in through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association.
03

Hands-on care, positioned for comfort

Treatment uses side-lying positions, supportive pillows and a pregnancy-adapted table, with gentle adjustments and soft tissue work suited to your stage.
04

Movement you can take home

You leave with a few simple positions, stretches or breathing drills for the days between visits, because what you do at home is where your body adapts.

When to Come in During Pregnancy

You can start at any point in pregnancy. Some people come in during the first trimester, when their back first sends the message. Others come in later, when the load is at its peak.

Let your midwife or physician know you're seeing a chiropractor, and Dr. Courtney is glad to work alongside them. If anything feels sudden, severe or unusual, such as bleeding, leaking fluid, strong cramping or pain that doesn't change with position, contact your midwife, doctor or labour and delivery unit first.

Is Prenatal Chiropractic Covered by Insurance

Chiropractic care is covered under most extended health plans, and being pregnant doesn't change that. Coverage varies between plans, so check your policy's chiropractic benefit.

Bring your insurance details and we can help you understand what applies before your first visit. Fees are reviewed with you before treatment begins.

Prenatal Chiropractic Questions

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

For most healthy pregnancies, gentle chiropractic care adapted for pregnancy is a reasonable option for back and pelvic discomfort. Dr. Courtney screens for anything that needs your midwife's or doctor's attention first, adapts her techniques to your stage, and never asks you to lie on your belly. If your care provider has advised against manual therapy, follow their guidance.

When in my pregnancy can I start?

Any trimester. Many people come in when discomfort first appears. Others start earlier to keep moving well as their body changes.

Do I need a referral?

No, you can book directly. We're happy to share notes with your midwife or physician if you'd like.

How often will I come in?

It depends on what you're feeling and how far along you are. Dr. Courtney suggests a plan after your first visit and adjusts it as your pregnancy progresses.
