What Postpartum Chiropractic Care Is and Who It's For

After birth, your body is recovering from nine months of change while taking on a whole new load: feeding, rocking, lifting a car seat and carrying a baby for hours a day, often on broken sleep. The ligaments that loosened in pregnancy take time to settle, and the core and pelvic floor need time to recover too.

Postpartum chiropractic care at Philo looks at how all of that is landing on your body. It suits anyone in the weeks, months or even years after birth who is feeling neck, back, pelvic or wrist discomfort, or who wants a guided way back to moving and exercising with confidence.

It follows the same arc as all care at Philo: relief for what's sore, then rebuilding the strength underneath, then finding a rhythm you can keep with a new baby in your life.

What a Postpartum Visit Looks Like

Bring your baby if that's easier. Feeding or settling mid-visit is part of the plan, not an interruption.

01

A conversation first

Dr. Courtney asks about your birth, your recovery so far, and what your days involve now: feeding, carrying, sleep and any exercise you want to get back to.
02

An assessment of how you're moving

She looks at your neck, back and pelvis, and at how your breathing and core are working together, drawing on her training in Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilization (DNS).
03

Hands-on care

Gentle adjustments and soft tissue work, including Active Release Technique (ART), for the areas taking the most strain.
04

A plan to rebuild

Simple breathing, core and pelvic exercises that fit into a day with a newborn, progressed as you're ready.

When to Come in After Birth

Many people come in after their six-week check with their midwife or doctor, but there's no deadline. Discomfort that started after a birth years ago is still worth looking at.

If you had a caesarean birth, Dr. Courtney adapts care around your healing and your care provider's guidance. For ongoing heaviness, leaking or pelvic pain, she may suggest a pelvic floor physiotherapist alongside your chiropractic care.

Postpartum Chiropractic Questions

How soon after birth can I come in?

Most people come in after their six-week check, or sooner for gentle care if their midwife or doctor agrees. After a caesarean birth, wait until your care provider has cleared you.

Can I bring my baby?

Yes, bring them along. Feeding, changing or settling during a visit is fine.

Is it too late if my baby is already a toddler?

No. Many people come in months or years after birth, and the patterns that started then can still change now.

Do I need a referral?

No, you can book directly. We're happy to share notes with your doctor, midwife or pelvic floor physiotherapist.
