What Shockwave Therapy Is and Who It Suits

Shockwave therapy uses acoustic pressure waves delivered through a handpiece to a specific area of tissue. The waves reach tendon and soft tissue that hands and manual work can struggle to influence, and the idea is to prompt the body's own repair response in a spot that has stalled.

It tends to suit people who have tried rest, stretching and hands-on treatment and still have a nagging, localised pain. At Philo Health, Mike Diolata developed SHOCKassage, which blends his manual techniques with radial shockwave for both long-standing and more recent complaints. Over the years he has worked with Olympians, CrossFit athletes, mixed martial artists, swimmers, track and field athletes, gymnasts, and dancers from Alberta Ballet, so the approach is built to handle demanding bodies as well as everyday ones. Shockwave rarely works alone here. It sits alongside massage therapy and movement work so the area gets addressed from more than one angle.

What to Expect on the Day

What a Shockwave Session Looks Like

Sessions are focused and don't take long, but there's real work packed in.

01

Finding the spot

Mike checks the area, feels for the tissue that's driving your pain, and marks where treatment will go. This is where his manual assessment matters, the waves only help if they land in the right place.
02

Applying the shockwave

The handpiece delivers pulses to the target area. You'll feel a firm tapping and some discomfort at the spot, which he adjusts to keep it tolerable. Most areas take only a few minutes of actual application.
03

Blending in manual work

With SHOCKassage, hands-on techniques are woven around the shockwave to release the surrounding tissue rather than treating the point in isolation.
04

Afterwards

Some tenderness in the area over the next day or two is normal. Wear comfortable clothing that lets us reach the area, and expect to feel worked-on rather than wrecked.

What Shockwave Therapy Costs and What Covers It

Fees are set per session and reviewed with you before we begin, so you know the cost of a course before committing to it. Because shockwave here is delivered by a registered massage therapist and often integrated with manual treatment, receipts are issued for massage therapy and may be eligible under your extended health benefits for massage.

Coverage varies between plans and sponsors, so check your massage therapy limits directly with your insurer before booking. We can talk through how a typical course might be spaced so you can plan around what your plan allows. We do not recommend more sessions than the area needs.

Why Have Shockwave Therapy at Philo Health

You would see Mike Diolata, RMT, who brings 26 years of practice and extended training in myofascial stretching, active release therapy, kinesiology taping and radial shockwave therapy. He built SHOCKassage from that combination, so shockwave here isn't a machine bolted onto a generic appointment, it's part of how he treats.

The clinic is on 24 Ave SW, an easy trip for people across the Beltline, Mission, Marda Loop and the inner-city neighbourhoods, and reachable for anyone travelling in from the southwest. If your pain turns out to need more than one discipline, we can connect your shockwave care with chiropractic and movement guidance under one roof, so nothing gets handed off and lost.

Shockwave Therapy Questions, Answered

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on how long the problem has been there and how the tissue responds. Many people have a short course spaced a week or so apart. Mike reviews progress as you go and stops when the area no longer needs it rather than working to a fixed package.

Does it hurt?

You'll feel a firm tapping and some discomfort at the treated spot, which can be sharp over the most tender tissue. Mike adjusts the intensity to keep it within what you can tolerate, and it eases as the session goes on.

Do I need a referral to book?

No referral is needed to book shockwave therapy with us. If your situation would be better served by imaging or a doctor's input, we'll tell you.

Can I train or exercise after a session?

Light activity is usually fine, but the treated area may be tender for a day or two. Mike will give you specific guidance based on what he treated and what you're training for.

What if shockwave isn't the right fit for my problem?

Then we won't push it. Part of the first visit is working out whether shockwave, manual work, movement or a combination gives you the best chance, and we build from there.
